Tutira School converted a previously out-of-bounds wasteland with a native plant area, fruit tree orchard, vegetable gardens and a chicken coop. The existing playground was also extended with a paved area where the students can play giant board games.

A special feature of the makeover was the creation of a kakabeak nursery, which focuses on growing endangered native seedlings. These are then given to the Department of Conservation to plant in the community.
