Horsham Downs School

Horsham Downs, Hamilton

Over 1,000 native trees and shrubs were planted expanding on the school’s existing bush area. The space now boasts its own microclimate and will attract more native wildlife to the school grounds such as tui and kereru.

The school makeover doubled as a competition to see which students could design and build the best weta hotel, bug motel, bat house, and bird feeder. Judging took place on the day and the winners’ projects now take pride of place in the garden. Students use them to study the life cycles and habitats of indigenous animals and insects.
