Whangamata Area School

Whangamata

Whangamata Area School converted a bare area of the schools grounds into an educational and interactive space inspired by the local landscape, featuring plants found in the Whangamata ecological district.

The makeover incorporated a central pathway that looks and feels as if you have walked from the beach and into the coastal forest. A second pathway shaped as a Koru represents the school’s symbol for new life, growth, strength and peace, and the students’ approach to learning.

A nursery for Pīngao plants and an outdoor classroom was constructed so students can observe the natural environment.
